They make great pack animals. They can carry a fair amount of weight and are very agile.
yes, you can ride a llama if your small enough.
you can use them as pack animals as well
ya they can. my grandpa took them both for rides when he traveled the world.
yes they can. It would probably be better to train them while they are younger though. They can also only carry a certain amount of weight. Be careful because their kick can kill wolves.
yes
Yes! But one thing to remember is to keep the weight they carry distributed equally on each side. Like if one side is 50lbs then the other needs to be the same.
The make great pack animals. Because they r sure footed & even r better at packing then horses & mules. They r smaller & fit into places where there is limited space, although horses & such can carry more weight. But llamas eat a lot less & r easy to care for. I had a girl who was trained to pull a cart, but I she died before I got the chance to try her out.
Anyway, there is also a rumor I have heard from breeders that when the guard llamas (usually male) make a certain sound many predators will run & stay away. They get totally freaked when they hear it. So that is a bonus.
I do not know about riding, I would not recommend it, but I guess it could be done.
If u mean to be riding on them, the biggest question is the weight of the person who would be riding relative to the size of the animals. They r both very smart & can be trained with clicker methods or other methods.
Alpacas would be too small in my opinion. while they might be able to carry a younger child, I think they r a little too flighty for that to be really safe.
Llamas have been trained to carry small adults, generally under 100 pounds. I remember that a woman named Jan Faiks, then a state senator in Alaska, rode a llama in a parade in the early 1980s.
It is much more common to teach them to drive to cart. I have no experience with alpacas in this regard, but my husband & I produced a video, now out as a DVD, with the methods of doing this developed by Bobra Goldsmith, who is a real expert. Many other people have done this too.
If u meant could the llamas or alpacas go along with u on a trail ride where u were on horseback, I guess this could be done, but keep in mind that both animals r naturally creatures of flight when something startles or scares them, so they could end up lost if u were out in the woods with them.
Also, if u came upon horses on the trail, it is a courtesy to be ready to lead ur llamas off the trail & out of the way, as horses who have never seen llamas can sometimes spook. I've seen quite a spectacular example of this!
The best thing to do with llamas, in my opinion, is to hike with them on a lead rope. They can easily carry ur load.
That is exactly what their job is in the Andies. They are pack animals, much like mules, however much lighter, more well mannored and can take high elexvations much easier than mules.
